No credit check, and what actually builds a file
Two different problems get sold as one. Opening an account when your credit is poor is a solved problem and should cost you nothing. Building a credit file is a slower thing, and only some of the products aimed at it do anything at all.
Start with the part nobody tells you clearly: a bank account is not a credit product. You are not borrowing, so there is usually no hard credit pull. Where people get refused, it is normally ChexSystems — a record of previously mishandled accounts, not a credit score. Those are different databases and different problems.
| Account | Rate | Monthly fee | What it is good at | Who it is bad for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build Card Current | n/a | None | No credit check, no minimum deposit, $0 annual fee, 0% APR, and it reports to all three bureaus — which is the part that actually builds the file. | Anyone who already has a healthy credit file. This solves a thin-file problem; if yours is not thin, it does nothing for you. |
| Credit Builder Card Chime | n/a | None | You can only spend money you have already moved across, so there is no interest and no way to run up a balance. Payment activity is reported to the bureaus. | Anyone unwilling to open a Chime checking account, which it requires. It is a feature of that account rather than a standalone product. |
| Credit Builder Account Self | n/a | None | No credit check, available in all 50 states, and builds savings and payment history at the same time. Reaching $100 of savings can unlock a secured card without a hard pull. | Anyone who needs the money back quickly — it is a loan you pay into before you receive it. The secured card is $0 in year one and $25 a year after, so check it is still earning its keep at the renewal. |

The one thing that decides whether it works
Does it report to the credit bureaus? That is the mechanism. A credit file is built out of reported payment history, so a product that does not report is not building anything no matter how it is described. All three above report; plenty of things marketed alongside them do not.
Everything else is comfort and cost. Secured-to-your-own-money designs, like Chime's, make it impossible to run up a balance you cannot clear — genuinely useful if a card is what got you here. Self builds savings and history at once, which suits someone starting from nothing. Current's is the simplest to open.
What a better score is actually worth
Worth saying plainly, because this corner of the industry runs on implying otherwise: a credit score is not a report card and it is not a measure of financial health. It is a prediction of how profitable you are to lend to. It matters exactly when you are about to borrow — a mortgage, a car, a decent card — and hardly at all otherwise.
So build it if borrowing is on the horizon, and do it with a $0 product. Do not pay a monthly subscription for a number you are not about to use.
If you are here because of a card balance
Then the score is the second problem. $3,000 at 24% is costing $60.00 a month while you build. Clearing it is a guaranteed 24% return, which is more than any investment reliably pays.
The Hurdle Rule calculator puts your own APR against whatever else you are doing with the money. One caveat that travels with every debt figure on this site: keep one month of costs accessible first, so that clearing the balance does not simply reload it the next time something breaks.
Questions
- Can I open a bank account with bad credit?
- Yes. Deposit accounts are not credit accounts. Some banks screen applicants through ChexSystems for prior account misuse rather than credit history, and the accounts on this page do not require a credit check at all.
- Do credit-builder accounts actually work?
- Only the ones that report to the credit bureaus, and only through the payment history they report. A product that does not report changes nothing, however it is marketed — that is the single thing to check before opening one.
- How long does it take to see a difference?
- Payment history takes months to accumulate, and a thin file moves faster than a damaged one. Anything promising a fast jump for a fee is selling you the promise, not the outcome.
